The Batelle Guarantees
Never Cry-It-Out
‘Cry-It-Out’ (or more commonly, the ‘extinction method’) is fundamentally against the basis of the Batelle process. We always ask parents to respond to their child's cries. We cannot promise that your child will never cry during the program... - it's how they communicate with you as their parent. However, we will show you how to understand what they are calling for, and how to respond. Our method integrates play as a way of building positive associations with sleep and bedtime. Batelle is room-sharing, co-sleeping, contact-napping, and breastfeeding friendly.
5-Minute Bedtime
Here, bedtime is defined as starting when your child is awake in bed until you say 'goodnight' and leave the room. By the end of our process, this will take 5 minutes with your child falling asleep independently. Batelle bedtimes are simple, rooted in play, and... ultimately flexible to suit your family's preferences - if you want a longer bedtime, go for it. Similarly, because our process is not Cry-It-Out, you are free to give them more support and love when they need it (illness, developmental milestones, environment change) without worrying about "breaking the process".
Sleep Through The Night
Depending on the age of your child, 'through the night' means between 10-13 hours. Good sleep is not just about duration, however - it is also about quality. One of the fundamentals of Batelle is ensuring your child feels safe and comfortable... in their bed and in sleep itself. A key change we have identified in children after completing Batelle's program is the increased length and regularity of their deep sleep cycles - crucial to a child's growth and development.
5-Year Commitment
Parenting is not a 2-week job. We will support you and your little one after you complete the Batelle program. It is our commitment to your family that we will solve your child's sleep struggles until they turn 6-years-old. Anything from answering... simple scheduling or regression questions to working with you to solve broader bedtime issues - it's all included.
Reviews from Batelle Families
More than a year later, we continue to highly recommend Batelle!
Sleep training is never easy, but having Batelle there to help us through was what made us go from unpredictable bedtimes and 5-6 wake ups a night, to consistent bedtimes and sleeping through the night. After two weeks in the program, we went on a long vacation that eventually derailed much of our progress but when we got home and reached out to the Batelle team, they got us back on track and supported us back to our goals. They keep you part of the program and continue to provide resources without making you feel rushed. I was concerned that if we didn't reach our goals in 2 weeks that we would be out of luck, much to my surprise, we did reach our goals after those 2 weeks and then when we needed the extra help, they were still there for us. Great program and great people. Be ready to commit to the program when you start, it's definitely all-in to achieve your goals.Read full review
Worth Every Penny
Worth every penny. You have to trust the process and really commit - but once you do, it truly works. We tried what felt like everything, including a lot of approaches marketed as 'gentle sleep training' that were just cry it out with a nicer name. The Batelle method truly is unique, gentle, and teaches sleep as a skill rather than a one time learned behavior. We went through both Batelle babies and the sleep school program, and couldn't have been more impressed or grateful for the support and kindness we received throughout both processes. The method absolutely requires more time, patience, and work than alternatives out there, but getting to our ultimate goal of sleeping through the night in a way that I actually felt good about was absolutely worth it. Couldn't recommend more highly.Read full review
From rocking to sleep to champ independent sleeper
Our sweet baby, Beau, loved to only sleep on us for naps and night. Batelle helped us first solve the nights, and then transition to a crib, and then naps. Beau now sleeps 7:30pm to 7:30am with an occasional visit to settle him in crib, but we never have to rock him anymore. He trusts his crib and loves it! His naps are great too. We were not one of the worst cases but Beau is now a fantastic sleeper, and we owe a lot to Batelle.Read full review

The Data Speaks For Itself
Pre-Batelle vs Post-Batelle
Here is an example of the quality of sleep your child will be getting after graduating Sleep School. This data, collected from an Owlet case study, was measured both before and after a toddler’s participation in Sleep School. This could be your child in just two weeks.
After Sleep School
This snapshot was taken three months after graduating Sleep School. Here, night wake-ups are non-existent and the child is sleeping through the night, with much more consistent and regular sleep cycles. It's also worth noting the lower heart rate, suggesting a much calmer and comfortable night for the child.

What will my process look like?
Your Roadmap to Sleep
Every child is different. Every parent is different. Every family is different. We draw on the world’s largest and most comprehensive children’s sleep intervention database to provide the right family with the right intervention at the right time. We will tailor our plan to these specific needs. Here is a sample plan for a 1-year-old that will explain how the program works:

Laying The Foundations
The foundation is key. This is the introduction, where you will begin the coaching process with your child. Here, the more you invest in preparation, the smoother and more effective the journey will be.

Walking Through Your Personalized Plan
We guide you step-by-step through your individualized plan and what to anticipate during the two-week period. This will take into account your child's age, stage of development, current sleep habits, schedule, and any medical conditions (autism, developmental delay, disability, etc). Additionally, we factor in you and your goals, your parenting preferences, and any medical conditions (anxiety, PPD, disability, etc). The highest impact changes can start being implemented already, here on day one.

Meet-and-Greet Call
To kick off your journey, we invite you to get to know your team and other parents of similar-aged children at the same stage. Nearly 50% of children struggle with some kind of significant sleep issue. You will be introduced to the resources that you have at your disposal until your child is 6, from our bespoke app to your army of experts.

Learning Through Play Intro
We have a strong emphasis on teaching a child through play. We will devise developmentally-appropriate games and activities that will begin to introduce components of your plan, and build that foundation of learning for your child.

Final Set-Up
Ensuring that your family is all set for the next stage of Sleep School, going over room set-up, safety, and any kit that may be useful to your family through the program.

Establishing The Healthy Baseline
Here, you will focus on breaking down any disruptive sleep associations (such as delaying, reliance on feeds, paci, or physical contact, etc.) and establishing the fundamentals of a good sleep environment and routine.

Receive Your Daily Milestones
Your plan will provide you with a step-by-step course of action to follow for bedtime, getting up, and the morning on each day. It will allow you to evaluate your progress, and receive input and guidance from our professionals as you go. You'll also see how to deal with any bedtime challenges.

Share & Support calls
You are no longer alone in this. Many of our parents find sharing with and supporting other families in similar positions mutually beneficial. This can be tough, so having a community to lean on in addition to the Batelle team is hugely valuable. These networks last long after graduation.

Specialist Guidance & Feedback
Batelle has an unparalleled knowledge of behavioral sleep interventions, and you now have access to it. We help more families in a day than a sleep consultant works with in a year. We know what works and what doesn't for all different kinds of families. You can tap into this knowledge base anytime, day or night.

Building Independence
How do you teach a child that you are there for them even when they cannot see you? How do you build a sense of independence in the most supportive and carring way possible? You will teach them to feel safe in their bed and develop a secure attachment, all the while with our sleep experts at your disposal.

Receive Your Daily Milestones
Your plan will give you step-by-step targeted instructions on how to teach your child to feel safe when it comes to sleep. This plan is rooted in your child's age and stage of development, and you will be prompted to support them in ways that foster security and independence.

Share & Support calls
Every Batelle parent's priority is to make their child feel safe. When things get tough, knowing that there are moms and dads going through the same things as you, with the same goal of fostering that secure attachment around sleep, helps a heck of a lot. We've seen the power of this community.

Feedback from our team of specialists
You have unlimited access to some of the most knowledgeable people in this space. Your job is to understand what you need to do, and work through it with your child. We will provide feedback, guidance, and ensure all of your questions are fully answered.

Building Predictability & Adaptability
You have implemented all of the behavioral interventions needed to establish a healthy baseline and build up trust in sleep & bedtime. This last piece is vital - to reinforce all the progress you have made, you need to give your child support, time, love, and your patience, allowing them to settle in their new-found independence.

Cementing Healthy Behavior
By laying the groundwork, you will have set your child up to feel secure even when they are not with you. After 3-4 nights of your consistent presence, patience should they initially resist, and providing reassurance as they need it, they will feel safe enough to stop pushing boundaries. We will work with you to determine when this milestone is reached, and how we can best support your child through this process and beyond.

Share & Celebration Calls
We've already made so much progress. Just as you will have supported each other when things got tough, now you can celebrate wins as things fall into place.

Looking Forward
Life happens. Some of it you can plan for, and some of it you can't. What you can plan for (travel, how to handle sickness, regressions), you have the team at your disposal 24/7 to navigate proactively. What you can't plan for, you've still got us until your child's 6th birthday, and we are here for you to help deal with things as they come. This is also a great opportunity to learn how to best assist your little one in other areas besides sleep.

Life, Sleep, and Beyond
Congratulations - you have completed the formal program. Now, it's over to you. You will have all the knowledge you need by this point to support your child not only with sleep but with other challenges that may come your way.

Reap the Rewards of A Well-Rested Family
Everything looks brighter after a good night's sleep. In fact, the most common observation Batelle parents see outside of sleep is an improvement in daytime mood and behavior of their child.

Milestones, Regressions, and Scheduling
You will no longer need to worry about whether your child's schedule needs to change or a developmental leap on the horizon that may cause a regression. You are now one step ahead. We will give you advanced warning when a schedule needs to change, how to time this change, and how to navigate this with minimal disruption. We can even anticipate times of significant growth that may lead to regressions, so you will be well-prepared to act proactively.

Ongoing Support
Once you join our alumni community, you will have access to calls with one of our specialists twice a week for any questions, as well as full access to your app and chat. This lasts until your child's 6th birthday.

THE PEDIATRIC KNOWLEDGE GAP
Developing Batelle’s relationships with pediatricians allows us to reduce this knowledge gap by providing pediatricians with information regarding sleep problems and solutions, as well as to inform and grow Batelle’s own knowledge base.

PROACTIVE INTERVENTION
Sleep has established causal links with a significant number of downstream issues in both adults and children. Solving sleep early can aid in the prevention and mitigation of future mental and physical health issues for the whole family.

Yes.
Daytime sleep and nighttime sleep are inherently linked.
During Sleep School, you will focus on nighttime sleep directly before addressing naps. This is because nighttime sleep is more regulated by circadian rhythms and is usually more consistent than daytime naps.
Once they are sleeping well at night, this will make naps much easier to handle and they can be focused on directly. Naps are addressed on Step 7 of Batelle Sleep School.
By establishing a consistent bedtime routine and helping your child to learn to fall asleep on their own at night, you can help them develop healthy sleep habits and set them up for success with daytime sleep as well.
Every child has a different plan, which adapts over time as we learn more about how a child is responding.
Step 1: Get a personalized plan built on our diagnosis. This plan is based on your child’s age, sleep issues, any medical considerations, and temperament. It is further tailored to your goals and lifestyle to fit your family on a day-to-day basis.
Step 2: Get unlimited daytime coaching & feedback. You will work through your plan with our experts supporting step-by-step. Adaptions are made as you go through, as we learn what is working best for you and your child.
Step 3: Real-time coaching for bedtimes & wake-ups as needed. You have access to in-the-moment coaching so that you never have a question unanswered. This also helps us adapt your plan live as we learn more about how your child responds.
Step 4: Get proactive guidance going forwards and once you have reached your initial goals. We know that things change. But, your child’s great sleep doesn’t have to. We’ll help navigate developmental leaps & regressions, moving house, sickness, starting daycare – you name it.
Step 5: Get subsequent assessments & coaching as needed. If you fall off course, we’ll get you back on track. Think of this as sleep insurance for the next 5 years. We have you covered.
No, Batelle does not employ the cry-it-out method.
While the cry-it-out and Ferber methods primarily aim to alter a child’s sleep habits, they might not always address the fundamental reasons a child struggles with sleep, such as their need for security, or help them learn the skills necessary to settle to sleep in new ways.
In contrast, the Batelle method is a responsive approach that emphasizes the significance of a caregiver’s co-regulation in promoting sleep and resilience as children are supported in learning new ways of settling to sleep more independently.
- Facilitate effortless bedtimes – 5 minutes or less (should you choose).
- Ensure your child sleeps through the night.
- Adopt a non cry-it-out approach.
- Provide access to experts for up to 5 years.
- Effortless bedtimes.
- Sleeping through the night.
We have an over 90% success rate amongst graduates. But it does require your effort and participation. If you for any reason need to cancel before completing the 10 steps, a $500 cancelation fee will apply. Please note you can’t request a cancellation more than 60 days after purchasing Sleep School.
If you want to learn more about if Batelle is for you, read this blog about “5 Things You Should Know When Deciding If Batelle Is For You“
Children with sensory processing disorders or ADHD? Absolutely. We have great success with our families who come for help.
Children who are teething or going through a regression? Yes, we will adapt your plan accordingly to make allowances for these situations. It will likely take a bit longer, but you can certainly get to the results.
Multiple children /twins? Yes, it does. However, we do advise you to either have two caregivers carrying out Sleep School, or to put one child through the program after the other.
Moms who are breastfeeding? Absolutely. We are breastfeeding and attachment-theory friendly. We’ll work with you to ensure you’re still able to breastfeed in any capacity you seek, and we’ll help you wean your child at night if appropriate/desired. If your child still requires a night feed, we’ll structure your program to make allowances for this.
Co-sleeping? Co-sleeping is used to describe both bed-sharing and room-sharing:
- Room-sharing is fully supported by Batelle’s method.
- Bed-sharing however, is against AAP guidelines for sleep safety. So while we respect this as a cultural and family lifestyle choice, the method will not be helpful fro families who want to continue bed-sharing. If you want to transition your child to their own bed, we’d be happy to provide guidance.
We are a currently in the (long!) process of being awarded FDA approval. Batelle is a fully accredited Better Business Bureau member.
