METHOD

Child-Led:

We will teach you how to get your toddler to sleep by engaging with them. Toddlers are really smart, and it doesn't make sense - nor is it fair - to treat them as you would a new-born, or to use methods based on disengaging such as CIO.

Support

24/7 Access:

Learning to speak "toddler" can be tough. We have a team of coaches specialised in our Method, who provide 24/7 support during the process. This means you don't have to doubt yourself or worry about how to navigate hostage negotiations: we have your back through this.

Regressions

Up to 6 Years of Support:

Regressions are real and happen at critical times of growth and change (such as transitioning to a toddler bed, starting daycare, or a new sibling). We cover them so you can rest easy. Think of Batelle as 'sleep insurance' over your child's formative years.

Solution

Bedtimes on Your Schedule:

No more hours of negotiations (bedtime will last less than 5 minutes). No more coming into bed with you at 3am (yes, you get your bed back). No more getting up every few hours.

Efficacy

Guaranteed Success:

We've had countlless happy toddlers and even happier parents. Have bedtimes on your terms again. We are so confident in the method, we will refund you in full if it doesn't work for your family.

The Data Speaks For Itself

Pre-Batelle vs Post-Batelle

Here is an example of the quality of sleep your child will be getting after graduating Sleep School. This data, collected from an Owlet case studywas measured both before and after a toddler’s participation in Sleep School. This could be your child in just two weeks.

Before Sleep School

Here's a snapshot of a child two weeks before they started Sleep School. In addition to the multiple night wake-ups, you'll notice that the child experiences very little deep sleep, with irregular and short sleep cycles interrupted by wakings.

After Sleep School

This snapshot was taken three months after graduating Sleep School. Here, night wake-ups are non-existent and the toddler is sleeping through the night, with much more consistent and regular sleep cycles. It's also worth noting the lower heart rate, suggesting a much calmer and comfortable night for the child.

TWO WEEKS. FOUR STAGES.

Your Roadmap to Sleep

This process is not about you – it is about your child. We teach your toddler that sleep is not a scary place – they will learn to put themselves to sleep and be fully comfortable and calm doing so, developing a healthy relationship with sleep. This is more than just sleep: it is building independence, trust, and resilience for your child.

Sleep School

We have subject-matter experts in each of our four stages, who will guide you through every step. There are live coaching sessions each day for each step, where our team will walk you through the process and make sure you understand the goals. These teams also provide 24/7 guidance once you start coaching your child through bedtimes, wake-ups, and mornings.

Process Overview - Stage One

The first stage is about ensuring you - the coach - are fully prepared and confident. You are your child's first and most important teacher. Our Stage One Team will guide and coach you through everything you need to know to not only reach your sleep goals, but to do so while being supportive and responsive to your toddler throughout.

Process Overview - Stage Two:

This stage is all about supporting your child. You will be with them the entire time, helping them reframe their expectations around sleep. The more repsonsive you are to them, the quicker they will build a sense of security and trust.

Process Overview - Stage Three

Stage three is centred around your child learning to choose to sleep independent of needing you to physically put them to sleep, hold their hand, lie in the room with them etc.

Process Overview - Stage Four

The fourth and final stage of Sleep School focuses on fine-tuning skills acquired over the course of the previous stages to ensure you feel equipped to stay on track. Your child will settle to bed in 5 minutes, and will sleep through the night independently.

SLEEP HELP REIMAGINED

24-Hour Guardian Angels

This is a new kind of pedagogical support. Our app is open through day and night for you to access everything you need to reach your sleep goals – Sleep School information, key learnings, and a direct line to our Sleep Guides will have the kids sleeping (and graduating!) in no time.

You are no longer alone in this

We are you and your child’s champion for two weeks. We are with you at every step of the way. We will help you navigate bedtimes, wake-ups and mornings, cheerleading and supporting you throughout. You are no longer alone in this – support is at your fingertips! Children don’t come with an instruction manual or live support – until now.

Two weeks. Sound Sleep.

Purchasing a Sleep School spot is purchasing the gift of sleep for your child, and for your family. Batelle provides a complete and holistic solution to sleep. In just two weeks, you too can join the ranks of Sleep School graduates, and solve sleep for your family.

SLEEP AFFECTS THE WHOLE FAMILY

This is much bigger than Sleep

Nobel Laureate economist James Heckman developed a model showing that investments in early childhood education have a higher return on investment than comparable investments in higher education. The compounding effects of developing strong habits and learnings at an early age have significant impacts on a child’s later life. Teaching a child healthy sleep habits and associations forms a foundation from which they can grow, develop, and flourish.

Pre COVID-19, over 40% of new mothers drop out of the workforce due to childcare – the pandemic has only exaserbated this gender disparity. Almost 60% of working mothers believe that managing childcare during COVID-19 has damaged their career prospects. Further, only 27.8% of women remain in full-time work three years after childbirth, compared to 90% of new fathers. One of, if not the principal stress-factor in childcare is dealing with a child’s sleep (or lack thereof). With this disparity, mothers are much more likely to bear the brunt of responding to night wakeups – with both parent and child missing out on crucial sleep.

IMPACT OF INVESTING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING

The earlier the investment in a child, the greater the effect on the child’s growth and development.
Sleep is the foundation of being able to learn and develop optimally.

Facts and Figures

Don’t just take our word for it.

HSAs/FSAs

Dependent on your provider, Sleep School could be covered under your HSA/FSA policy. To find out if your HSA/FSA provider will pay for Sleep School, contact them directly to ask if sleep consulting is eligible – this could be under multiple different codes, such as Health Institute Fees and Sleep Deprivation Care, as well as Newborn Care.

Your pediatrician may be able to help – some policies will require a Letter of Medical Necessity which can be obtained from your pediatrician directly.

Review from Batelle Families

26 July 2021

Worth. Every. Penny.

Batelle sleep school has transformed our lives. Going into it we had very little hope of a positive outcome because of how co-dependent our toddler had become in order to sleep. Interrupted sleep, cries for more milk, and leaky diapers were our normal on a nightly basis but magically this all ended before sleep school even fully completed! We did encounter some small issues such as delays in getting started due to products being on back order and technical issues with the app, but these were all eventually resolved and the Batelle team was very supportive throughout the entire process and stayed in constant communication with...

We fully expected to ask for our money back

We had tried everything and I mean EVERYTHING to get our 2 year old to sleep by herself in her bed in her own room. Before we started Batelle we paid another sleep consultant far too much and we were guided through cry it out method which only made matters worse. There was no money back guarantee and after 2 weeks we were on our own. We turned to Batelle as our last ditch effort because they promised us they wouldn’t abandon us AND offered a money back guarantee. We figured we had nothing to lose and we fully expected to ask for our money back. To our surprise, it worked! Actually, in retrospect we should not have been surprised...

Tale From a Skeptical Dad

II’ll tell you first hand, I am as traditional as it gets when it comes to raising our son. So, when it came to getting him out of our bed and training him to sleep on his own I felt Cry It Out was best. Who knew (not me) that as soon as I put him to sleep, he would wake up 1hr and sometimes as soon as 10 min later, leaving my wife and I with less than 3 hours of sleep!!! So we tried the CIO Method. It was very emotional for my wife, and most of the time it didn’t work. She ran across Batelle on IG and wanted to try it. In so many words, I was very very against it. I didn’t think that anyone could understand what we were going through...

FAQs & Safety

“Cry-It-Out” is the act of leaving a child crying alone in a room without responding to them in some capacity. Under this definition, even Ferber methods and phase-in methods include varying elements of “Cry-It-Out”.

Conversely, our method provides you with techniques and strategies that ensure you’re always able to respond to your child in some meaningful capacity, thereby reinforcing to your child that you’re always there for them if and when they need.

Firstly, Sleep School works equally well for nap and night time. They are both based on the same relationship a child has with sleep, even if difficulties are manifesting at one time rather than another. Once a child has mended their relationship with sleep, both nap and night-time will be easier, more predictable and less disrupted by inevitable changes in life/schedule or sleep regressions.

With regards to weaning and potty-training, these are both things that we can provide help with in conjunction with Sleep School – we take a holistic approach to solving your child’s sleep struggles and are more than happy to help with anything that could be affecting their sleep.

Batelle teaches parents to overcome problems with sleep in a gentle, supportive, and enriching manner. There are many misconceptions about sleep, starting with how sleep problems are considered by many as unsolvable. Children need to sleep, and yet they often wake up multiple times during the night or resist going to sleep in the first place. This is not an inevitable factor of childhood; rather, it stems from a fundamental misalignment of when a child feels safe in relation to sleep.

Our primary goal is to repair and reframe your child’s relationship with sleep, teaching them to feel safe and foster a sense of trust in the sleep process. When a child feels safe and has clear expectations around sleep, they will stop fighting sleep and will naturally begin to sleep through the night.

Batelle’s method is both co-sleeping and contact-napping friendly.

A lot of methods state that you cannot co-sleep or contact nap; however, this is only because results will always be fragile if you do not focus on helping a child to feel safe. If you teach a child a habit, such as in the cry-it-out method, the child will learn that they need to figure things out for themselves and won’t be comforted when they cry. If that child were to go back to co-sleeping, they would feel a sense of safety again. If you then tried to put them back in their own bed, you would need to “re-teach” the expectation that they will not receive comfort in relation to sleep.

Conversely, the Batelle method teaches children to fundamentally trust that sleep is a safe place, and provides parents with the tools to have flexibility around co-sleeping and contact-napping, as both spaces will be safe spaces for them (should you wish to retain any of these elements).

If you need help with anything sleep related after you have graduated from Sleep School, such as sleep regressions or disruptions, you can reach out to the team free of charge until your child is six years old. We see this as a sleep “insurance” of sorts offered as part of the service.

Because our goal is to repair your child’s sleep for the long-term, our method is a resilient and sustainable solution that is able to weather inevitable life changes. When sleep is approached with the consideration of a child’s underlying need to feel safe, the understanding and trust they build up is something they hold onto for the rest of their lives.

It does! However, we do advise you to either have two caregivers carrying out Sleep School, or to put one child through the program after the other.

We are a currently in the (long!) process of being awarded FDA approval. This will help our Batelle families to claim the cost of Sleep School on their insurance / FSA / HSA.

Yes. At Batelle, we like to work directly with pediatricians to help provide patients and their families with the best and most personalised service possible – do have your pediatrician get in touch! Pediatricians also provide the means to help Sleep School be elegible for your insurance/FSA/HSA coverage. Visit our pediatrician page to learn more

  • Ensure that everything is out of reach when in the Hug e.g. mobiles, curtains, plug sockets, hanging clothes, blankets draped over something nearby that they can pull down over themselves, etc. Your child should not be able to reach anything of danger when in the Hug
  • Check for shelves or framed pictures being directly over the bed with the potential to fall on a child
  • Cover any open plugs with something like safety outlet covers or d-line cords
  • Check that your child’s, folding screen, sleep light, visual timer, camera, monitor, and any other Sleep School tools are out of reach – ‘they are tools not toys’
  • Ensure there are no windows within reach in the rooms a child plays in, or if there are that they have safety locks on them
  • Ensure there are no cords or drawstrings within reach (suffocation risk)
  • Ensure there are no plastic bags within reach
  • Make sure there is nothing that could cause a fire (open flames, lighter etc) and it is advisable to put a smoke alarm in the room as well

If your child is not using the Hug, or you decided to transition them out of it, please make sure that you have sufficiently removed any risks that may arise as a result.

  • If your child is in the crib, make sure that the crib is as low as it can be, so that it is harder for your child to climb out of the crib
  • Children can start climbing out of cribs as early as 10 months, so make sure you are extra vigilant about this from this age onwards
  • If your child is in a toddler bed, make sure that this is not too high off the ground as they can hurt themselves if they fall out
  • Make sure you fully child-proof the room so that any nighttime exploring is not dangerous (see General Room Safety)
  • If your child can open a door, you may need to consider putting up a gate or locking the door at night, especially if there are stairs they could fall down. Otherwise, you will need to make sure that any room in the house that they may have access to is fully child-proofed

No, we do not use any chemicals or flame retardants. We comply with the 16 CFR Part 1610 Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles, but given that cotton is naturally flammable, please make sure you do not bring any open flame (including cigarettes) near your child while they are in their Hug.

Within 2 weeks of Batelle, sleep will be solved.
